Email Design
I have a passion for design and specialise in design and development of email. I like to create personalised user experiences and emails that leave an impression. Through my work with Funky Pigeon I have been able to completely rebuild and reshape the way the emails look. With an emphasis on scalable, mobile-friendly design, I incorporate touches of uniqueness with dynamic content, nudges of behavioural science and engaging visuals.
Mystery Discount
We had 5 levels of discount ranging from 25% off to free card. For the email I decided to animate a spinning wheel, displaying all levels of discount. We knew that this was an eye catching lead into the offer. To drive traffic we applied a ‘Curiosity Gap’ by only displaying the level of discount the customer would receive once they clicked ‘Get Code’. This then took them to a web layer, where the repeated wheel animation would stop on their discount and reveal a code.
Post Purchase
The brief for this email was to get customers who had already purchased a card to upsell to a gift. Instead of labelling it as an upsell, we saw it as an opportunity to treat it as a reward.
Our previous email was solely concentrated on the offer. To elevate it I added the padlock and the title ‘reward unlocked’ as a way of invoking reciprocity. This gives the user the impression that we’re reciprocating their efforts - they’ve achieved something in purchasing a card, so here is a thank you from us.
I added some personalisation into the copy to engage the customer further.
By moving the offer into second position we were able to give it it’s own space and sense of importance. It’s not just a sales email after all, it’s a gifts from us to the user.
I added one of the new Funky Pigeon characters to the ‘Add Some Heart & Soul’ sub heading, adding some character and the anthropomorphism.
Next I displayed some of our best selling and newest products as recommendations.
Welcome
Our New brand identity at Funky Pigeon came with a new character - Funky herself. A soulful singer with a hint of attitude.
For our welcome email we wanted to make sure Funky was front and centre. I set the ‘Welcome’ text in the branded chrome font treatment and placed Funky below, lit by stage spotlighting and with a warm welcoming expression. As if she’s about to burst in to song at your arrival.
For the image we didn’t have the brand assets to portray the right emotion, so I took it upon myself to lift and cut out screenshots from the hi-res advert. Using the right image is essential for this email. It’s amongst the first interactions a customer may have with the brand, so it’s important to make the right first impression.
I decided to embed Trustpilot reviews at the bottom of the email. Using 5 star reviews shows that Funky Pigeon is a trustworthy site. It’s confirmation bias and implies that the customer has made a good choice. Also alluding to the ‘Peak End Rule’ of making a positive lasting impression.
